Productivity Writer & Developer

Jonathan Griffin is a productivity writer and developer, and a former UK commercial property solicitor. He works from the primary literature, turning peer-reviewed neuroscience and cognitive science into practical, evidence-based systems for focus and attention, and building the tools that put them into practice.

TL;DR
Productivity writer and developer focused on evidence-based focus and attention. I write science-backed articles on focus, attention management, and brain-aligned productivity systems, and I build the tools that put them into practice. Everything is grounded in peer-reviewed research and real-world application.

About Me

From property law to web development to writing and building for productivity

I’m Jonathan Griffin, a productivity writer and developer. I write science-backed articles on attention, focus, and cognitive productivity that bridge neuroscience research with practical application, and I build the tools that put that research to work.

My journey here has been unconventional:

  • Commercial property solicitor at Birketts LLP in the UK (2006–2008) - where I learned the importance of sustained focus and managing complex cognitive loads under pressure
  • Web developer and technical SEO consultant - more than a decade in web publishing and SEO, including previously owning and editing TheWebmaster.com , a web hosting news and reviews publication, and running a technical SEO consultancy; that systems-and-optimization work now informs my approach to productivity writing
  • Productivity writer and developer - writing the science, building the tools , and sharing code on GitHub , driven by a deep fascination for how attention and focus actually work

Today, I synthesize insights from neuroscience, behavioral psychology, and the wider cognitive science literature. Every article includes citations, peer-reviewed studies, and practical frameworks you can implement immediately.

The driving question behind all my work:

“How do we align our daily workflow with how the brain actually functions?”

This isn’t about productivity hacks or time management tricks. It’s about understanding the fundamental cognitive mechanisms that drive effective work and building systems around those principles.

Current Projects

What I'm building and writing to help you work better

I’m actively developing multiple projects to bridge the gap between cognitive science and practical productivity:

Focus Timer Application

  • Built on ultradian rhythm research and attention span science
  • Implements evidence-based break patterns and focus cycles
  • In ongoing development with React/Next.js

Long-Form, Research-Backed Articles

  • Breaking down productivity myths with peer-reviewed evidence
  • Deep dives into attention science, memory research, and cognitive load theory
  • Each article includes citations and practical implementation guides

Web Applications for Productivity

  • Tools that implement cognitive science principles in real-world workflows
  • Focus on evidence-based features rather than arbitrary productivity methods
  • Built with modern web technologies and accessibility in mind

The goal across all projects: make cognitive science research accessible and actionable for knowledge workers who want to work with their brains, not against them.

My Writing Philosophy

How I approach productivity science and why it matters

Productivity advice has become too prescriptive and one-size-fits-all. My approach is fundamentally different:

  • Evidence Over Anecdotes - Every technique I write about is grounded in peer-reviewed research from cognitive science, neuroscience, and behavioral psychology. Personal experience informs application, but science drives the foundation. For a worked example, see my deep dive into the origins of the Pomodoro Technique .

  • Systems Over Quick Fixes - Rather than productivity hacks, I focus on understanding the underlying cognitive mechanisms that drive focus and attention. Once you understand how the brain works, you can build lasting systems rather than chasing the latest technique.

  • Flexibility Over Dogma - The brain is complex and individual. What works depends on your chronotype, cognitive style, work context, and personal constraints. My goal is to give you frameworks that adapt to your reality.

  • Practical Implementation - While I love diving deep into research, every article includes actionable insights you can implement immediately. Science without application is just interesting trivia.

My legal background taught me to demand evidence and question assumptions. My technical background showed me how to build scalable systems. Now I apply both to help you work with your brain’s natural patterns instead of fighting against them.

This isn’t about working harder or longer - it’s about working in alignment with how attention and focus actually function.

Connect & Collaborate

How to reach out, collaborate, or reference my work

I’m always interested in connecting with fellow writers, developers, researchers, and readers who share a passion for evidence-based productivity.

Reach out if you:

  • Have questions about the research behind any article or want to discuss methodology
  • Are interested in collaborating on productivity writing or building evidence-based productivity tools
  • Want to build web applications that implement evidence-based productivity principles
  • Found an error or have suggestions for improving my approach
  • Are curious about how legal and technical backgrounds translate to productivity writing
  • Want to share what’s working (or not working) in your own productivity experiments

For citations and references: All articles include complete reference lists with peer-reviewed sources. I continuously update my articles as new studies emerge, so check article dates for the most current findings.

Response commitment: I read every email personally and respond within one week. For collaboration inquiries or detailed research questions, I may take longer to provide thoughtful responses.

The best conversations come from people who are applying these concepts in real work environments and can share what they’re discovering in practice.
